The Shetland Sheepdog is one of the best pet dog any owner can have. It is loyal, caring, loving and extremely active. It would do anything to make sure his owner is happy with him. The eagerness to please the owner never stops.  The breed is also exceptionally beautiful that can instantly cause a person to fall in love with them.
When it comes to training, the Shetland Sheepdog can learn things quite easily and quickly. They are always excited and always in the mood for playtime. However, the “lively” factor can go a mile ahead. Too much excitement can also cause a number of problems. The breed tends to bark more than it is required and can also get extremely suspicious of strangers. They also tend to bite when provoked and sometimes just wish to be all alone. Nevertheless, these traits can be easily controlled if proper diet and exercise is provided.

There are a number of health concerns related to the Shetland Sheepdog. Vision impairment and diseases of the eyes are quite common. This disorder is genetic that can be visible at any age. One of the most common diseases is the Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC). It is the cancer of the bladder and its early detection can eradicate the disease quite easily. The Von Willebrand disease is also a commonly seen disorder among the breed that can get extremely severe which may result to a shortened life.

Since Shetland Sheepdogs are extremely active in nature, they need plenty of exercises on a daily basis. A daily run or a long walk or a game of Frisbee can keep the dog active at all times. The diet should be rich in proteins to keep their  stamina and health up however, too much feeding can cause instant obesity in this breed. It is highly recommended to keep a close watch on what they eat. The dog is known to run wild whenever it is let free. It can get quite careless at times so the owner needs to make sure it is always in a safe environment. Since the breed is extremely furry, it does tend to get dirty quite easily. With regular bathing and brushing, the coat and the hygiene will remain clean for a long time. |
